New calibration technology for advanced machining centers

Kern Microtechnik, a world leader in precision machining, needed to further improve and automate the highly complex calibration process for its high-precision 5-axis machining centers. The company sought a solution to ensure the highest accuracy and reduce the complexity of commissioning. They identified potential solutions from vendor Hexagon at a trade show.

Hexagon implemented its ETALON LINECAL and ETALON X-AX LASERBAR systems, used with TRAC-CAL software, to enable fully automatic calibration of the machine axes. This allowed for the high-accuracy determination of geometric deviations without requiring fine alignment by an operator. As a result, Kern significantly reduced calibration time through automated measurement sequences. Hexagon's technology also equipped Kern's service department with a portable solution for more effective on-site diagnostics and calibration of machines at customer locations, further solidifying Kern's technology leadership.
