A Hexagon Case Study
The National Informatics Centre (NIC), a provider of IT services to the Indian government, faced the challenge of upgrading its national GIS framework to a higher 1:10,000 scale. This required processing and efficiently serving petabytes of domestic satellite imagery across the web to support e-governance applications, all while adhering to national data policies and moving away from commercial basemap services. To meet this need, they partnered with vendor Hexagon.
Hexagon provided its ERDAS IMAGINE software with the ECW compression format to process and dramatically reduce the size of the imagery. Using Hexagon's ERDAS APOLLO, NIC then published a seamless, OGC-compliant web map service. The solution successfully compressed 9 petabytes of data down to a 5 TB service, enabling fast streaming of high-resolution natural color imagery across India. This national basemap service is now used by multiple government agencies for improved planning and governance, ensuring compliance with data policy and reducing dependency on commercial services.
