A Hexagon Case Study
MTU Aero Engines, a manufacturer of jet engines, faced the challenge of drastically increasing production of complex blisk components from 600 to 3,500 units. To meet this steep ramp-up, they required a metrology solution for quality assurance that would drastically reduce measuring times while ensuring process stability and test instrument capability. They engaged vendor Hexagon to find a solution.
Hexagon implemented a solution using high-precision Leitz PMM-C coordinate measuring machines with QUINDOS software and offline programming via the I++ Simulator. This reduced overall measuring times by 65% and blade profile measurement times by 75%. The offline programming capability freed up the physical machines for production tasks and allowed programmes to be developed independently of the production cycle. The successful partnership and solution enabled MTU to meet its increased production goals.
