Mould maker Kavia Tooling combines EDGECAM with a CMM and customised software

Kavia Tooling, a designer and manufacturer of precision injection mould tools, faced significant challenges with machine downtime. Setting up components directly on their CNC and EDM machines was a time-consuming process that left their equipment idle, with their Sodick EDM machine being a particular bottleneck. To address this, they worked with vendor Hexagon, utilizing a Hexagon Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) with customized PC-DMIS software to create an offline setup solution.

Hexagon's solution involved customizing their flexible CMM software to find part offsets offline, a process known as Zero Transfer. This was combined with Kavia's own custom "Merge" software, developed with their Hexagon EDGECAM system, which collates multiple programs into a single file. The results were transformative: setup time for difficult components was reduced from one day to just one hour, machine downtime was drastically reduced, and the former bottleneck EDM machine became the fastest in the factory.
