Motor Sich JSC - Customer Case Study

Motor Sich JSC, a major Ukrainian manufacturer of aircraft and helicopter engines, faced a critical challenge in modernizing its quality control metrology equipment. Their large, outdated 1986 Mauser coordinate measuring machine (CMM) was slow, inaccurate, and difficult to maintain, jeopardizing new product development. The company needed to improve inspection capabilities but wanted to avoid the lengthy production stoppage that installing a brand-new large CMM would cause. They partnered with vendor Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence to find a solution.

Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence implemented a retrofit solution for the old Mauser CMM, reusing 80% of its original hardware. They upgraded the controller, installed a new probe head for scanning, replaced communication systems, and updated the software to PC-DMIS CAD++. This comprehensive upgrade was completed in just three weeks with minimal lab disruption. The project was so successful it launched a long-term partnership; by 2013, Motor Sich had expanded its operations with numerous additional Hexagon CMMs and portable measuring arms, ensuring high-precision quality control for its engine production.
