A Hexagon Case Study
Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering & Technology was facing a common industrial challenge involving the welding of dissimilar metals, specifically copper and steel, in heat exchangers. The differing properties of the metals led to high failure rates, increased material costs, and a risk of early failures. The institute employed Hexagon's MSC Software Marc, a nonlinear finite element analysis tool, to investigate the complex thermal physics of this welding process.
Using Hexagon's Marc software, the team performed a transient thermal analysis to model the heat distribution during welding. The simulation provided key insights, revealing that offsetting the welding arc towards the copper plate helped achieve a better temperature profile at the joint interface. This approach, validated with experimental data, demonstrated the potential to significantly reduce material waste and improve the life of the welded parts, offering a cost-effective alternative to physical prototyping.
