A Hexagon Case Study
TECHDYN Engineering, an R&D spin-off from the University of Cassino, needed to accurately predict material performance under extreme conditions like high deformation and strain rates for applications in defense and industry. The high cost of physical prototyping and the limitations of existing material models presented a significant challenge. They turned to Hexagon's Marc finite element analysis software to implement and validate a new, more accurate physical-based material model.
Using Hexagon's Marc, TECHDYN implemented their model via user-defined functions to simulate a demanding Dynamic Tensile Extrusion test. The Marc software handled the extreme deformations and provided highly accurate results, with simulations predicting the number, size, and shape of material fragments within a +5%/-10% error band compared to physical tests. This validated solution allows TECHDYN to offer consulting services that reduce physical testing, improve prediction accuracy, and ultimately enhance product performance for their clients.
