A Hexagon Case Study
The customer, Manfred Schmidgall Modell- und Formenbau, a German mould and model manufacturer, needed to improve the speed and accuracy of their measuring processes on a large five-axis machining centre. They were dissatisfied with their existing tool setters, which led to inaccuracies and costly repairs. They turned to vendor Hexagon for a solution involving laser tool setters and probing software.
Hexagon implemented its m&h laser tool setter and 3D Form Inspect software. The non-contact laser tool setter provided more accurate measurements by accounting for the tool's actual clamping position and thermal influences, while the software enabled rapid in-machine inspection and quality control. The results were significant: the customer achieved twice the speed for certain workpieces, a major reduction in surface offset, and the elimination of the need for a separate tool presetting device. Hexagon's solution provided greater accuracy and faster throughput.
