Lufthansa Systems Relies on Data Visualization for Real-Time Updates Inflight

Lufthansa Systems, a subsidiary of Lufthansa Airlines, needed to help pilots avoid costly delays and obstacles caused by unpredictable weather and high air traffic density. To address this, they partnered with vendor Hexagon and leveraged its Luciad visualization technology to enhance their flight planning solution, Lido/Flight, with a new decision-support system called WINDS.

The solution from Hexagon enabled Lufthansa Systems to integrate and visualize vast amounts of dynamic data, including real-time weather and airport conditions. This provided pilots and dispatchers with superior situational awareness and route optimization. The results were significant, with the system processing 11 million position updates daily, helping to save tens of thousands of dollars per avoided diversion, and nearly half of all flights in Europe being calculated using the Lido/Flight WINDS platform.
