Case Study: LfAS digitizes archaeological heritage with Hexagon 3D scanning technology

A Hexagon Case Study

Preview of the LfAS Case Study

LfAS - Customer Case Study

The Landesamt für Archäologie Sachsen (LfAS), a significant archaeological repository, faced the challenge of accurately digitizing its vast and diverse collection of over 24 million artifacts. The items varied immensely in size, weight, and surface material, with many featuring complex, glossy, or dark surfaces that were difficult to capture with previous scanning technologies. To modernize its approach and achieve higher quality data without risking damage to delicate objects, LfAS partnered with Hexagon for a new scanning solution.

Hexagon implemented its StereoScan neo structured light scanner, which uses Smart Phase Projection technology to accurately digitize even the most challenging surfaces without needing potentially harmful coatings. The solution was enhanced with an automatic turntable and OptoCat software for processing. This allowed LfAS to streamline its workflow, drastically reduce scanning time, and produce highly detailed 3D models with superior texture mapping. The partnership with Hexagon, which spans a decade, has been integral to LfAS's operations, enabling them to successfully scan approximately 25,000 objects and make them accessible through an online museum while supporting future restoration and outreach projects.
