Leica Absolute Tracker AT901 ensures efficiency of hydroelectric power stations

Vorarlberger Illwerke, an electricity provider operating hydroelectric power stations in Austria, needed to precisely measure its large turbine rotors to monitor for wear, deformation, and efficiency losses. The company turned to vendor Hexagon and its Leica Absolute Tracker AT901 system to capture highly accurate 3D data of these critical components.

The solution from Hexagon involved using the portable laser tracker system, along with the Leica T-Probe and T-Scan, to digitize the complex geometry of the massive turbine rotors. This allowed for detailed analysis to detect damage, prevent defects, and ensure components were reinstalled in their exact original positions after inspections. The technology proved reliable even in the demanding alpine environment, helping Vorarlberger Illwerke avoid costly delays and maintain the high efficiency of its power generation assets.
