Case Study: a large-scale energy company improves turbine vibration analysis with Hexagon ATS600

A Hexagon Case Study

Preview of the Large-Scale Energy Company Case Study

Large-scale energy sector measurements with the Leica Absolute Tracker ATS600 deliver accuracy in a challenging environment

The customer, a large-scale energy company operating the Temelín Nuclear Power Station, faced a challenge with a vibrating turbine. They lacked the technology to precisely detect how thermal expansion was causing static parts of the turbine to shift, which increased vibration and risked damage. Hexagon was brought in with its Leica Absolute Tracker ATS600 measurement system for a pilot project to address this.

Hexagon's solution utilized the ATS600 tracker to conduct a highly accurate pilot measurement of ten key points on a bearing stand over a three-hour period in a challenging 35°C, high-vibration environment. The system successfully detected minute deflections, proving its suitability for the required accuracy of approximately 80 microns. This successful pilot led to a second, more extensive measurement to monitor the movement of the turbine's base plates over a longer time horizon for comparison with operational data.
