Itel Telecomunicazioni, an Italian engineering company specializing in medical systems, needed to position a patient with extreme precision for a new proton therapy treatment. The challenge was to ensure a proton beam could target tumors with millimetric accuracy, which required a system to verify and correct a patient's position on a robotic bed in real time. To achieve this, they utilized a Leica Absolute Tracker AT401 laser tracker from Hexagon.

The solution from Hexagon involved using its laser tracker to monitor reflectors on the patient bed, enabling real-time position verification and aim correction for the proton beam. This implementation limited the chain of targeting errors to just a couple of millimeters, ensuring the treatment operates at maximum efficiency and safety. The high accuracy of the Hexagon system significantly increased the potential treatment effectiveness for a wider range of cancers.
