A Hexagon Case Study
Insphere, a UK-based company providing contract measurement services and expertise primarily to the aerospace sector, faced the challenge of improving the time-consuming and labor-intensive inspection of large, complex components for its client, GKN. The traditional methods of manual hand tools and inflexible coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) created significant production bottlenecks and a lack of traceable data, motivating the search for a robust automated solution.
Hexagon provided the core technology for the solution, the HYPERSCAN system, which utilized their Leica Absolute Tracker AT960 and Leica T-Scan 5 laser scanner mounted on a robot. This automated, non-contact inspection cell dramatically reduced the inspection cycle time for a rib from 90 minutes on a CMM to just 20 minutes on the shop floor. For Hexagon, the project demonstrated the powerful application of their metrology technology, enabling Insphere to deliver a standardized, off-the-shelf automated inspection solution that provides complete, reliable, and traceable data.
