Case Study: Tier IV launches Japan's first autonomous taxi service with Hexagon AutonomouStuff

A Hexagon Case Study

Preview of the Tier IV Case Study

How Tier IV worked with Hexagon | AutonomouStuff to combine the technology necessary to deploy an autonomous taxi

The customer, Tier IV, a Japanese tech startup and developer of Autoware, faced the challenge of choosing and implementing the correct autonomous driving technology to launch Japan's first autonomous taxi service. They collaborated with the vendor, Hexagon, through its AutonomouStuff division, to incorporate a drive-by-wire system into their vehicle platform.

Hexagon's solution was to design and install its proprietary Platform Actuation and Control Module (PACMod), a drive-by-wire system that provides precise electronic control of the vehicle's core driving functions. This integration enabled the successful public demonstration of autonomous taxi tests in Tokyo in late 2020, a major milestone that involved over 100 passengers and received positive feedback on safety and comfort, paving the way for planned commercial deployment.
