How the usage of automation and machine control technologies help contractors mill the surface of an 11.5-kilometre-long motorway section in Switzerland

The customer, KIBAG Bauleistungen AG, faced the challenge of accurately and efficiently refurbishing an 11.5-kilometre section of the A1 motorway. To ensure a precise foundation for new asphalt, they required a subcontractor to perform high-accuracy milling based on a digital model. For this task, subcontractor REPROAD AG utilized the Leica iCON pave 3D machine control solution and the Leica MC1 software platform from Hexagon’s Leica Geosystems.

The solution from Hexagon automated the milling process by using a total station to track the machine's position in real-time, comparing it to a digital design and automatically correcting for any deviations. This eliminated the need for manual staking and spraying of mill depths. The result was millimeter-level accuracy, a perfectly even surface, and a significant increase in productivity, allowing the team to mill up to 15,000 square meters of surface per day. The technology also reduced operator error and ensured the project met the required specifications for the subsequent paving operation.
