Fenton Precision Engineering - Customer Case Study

Fenton Precision Engineering, a UK-based toolmaker and injection moulder, was challenged to design and produce a complex mould tool for a new medical device to help prevent deep vein thrombosis. The part required extremely thin wall sections and a complex geometry with 38 nodules, demanding high precision in both design and machining. To meet this challenge, they utilized software solutions from the vendor, Hexagon, including VISI for CAD design and WORKNC for CAM programming.

The solution involved using VISI’s reverse engineering and flow simulation capabilities to perfect the mould design and ensure optimal material flow. Hexagon's WORKNC software was then used to program the toolpaths, enabling the precise machining of the complex cores and cavities with high-quality surface finishes that minimized polishing. The project was completed successfully, with the mould tool—comprising around 30 components—built in approximately six weeks. The final injection-moulded medical device was brought from initial enquiry to first production in an 11-month timeline.
