A Hexagon Case Study
EPB, a municipal utility in Chattanooga, Tennessee, sought to deploy a communitywide fiber optic network to provide gigabit-speed internet and support a highly advanced smart grid power distribution system. To achieve this, the utility partnered with vendor Hexagon and utilized its HxGN NetWorks platform, specifically HxGN NetWorks Core and HxGN NetWorks Comms, for geospatial asset management.
By implementing Hexagon's solution, EPB successfully built the nation's most advanced smart grid and became the first U.S. provider to offer 1 Gig and later 25 Gig internet service. The results were profound: a study documented a $2.7 billion community economic impact and the creation of nearly 10,000 jobs. Furthermore, the smart grid enabled a 55% annual reduction in outage minutes, saving an estimated $55 million per year in avoided lost productivity.
