A Hexagon Case Study
Enercon, a wind turbine manufacturer, faced a significant challenge in performing quality control on large rotor blade flanges. The process of measuring these flanges with a laser tracker was slow and cumbersome, requiring the blade to be moved from its machining position and probed manually, a task that took over an hour and made it difficult to restore the exact position for further processing. To address this, they turned to vendor Hexagon for a solution involving their DPA portable coordinate measuring machine.
Hexagon's solution involved augmenting the DPA system with a digital camera and projector to project a measurement grid directly onto the flange, enabling a contactless and highly accurate 3D scan without moving the component. This innovative approach slashed the measurement time by 75 percent, down to just 20 minutes, and eliminated the time-consuming repositioning step. The results provided Enercon with enormous time and cost advantages, allowing for immediate further processing and establishing the DPA as a versatile, long-term measurement solution for their production needs.
