Development of fluid control equipment using computer simulation and quality engineering

Maruyama Mfg. Co., Inc., a manufacturer of agricultural and industrial pumps, sought to improve the efficiency of its development process and the performance of its fluid control equipment. Their challenge was to reduce the extensive time and resources required for physical prototyping and testing. To address this, they turned to vendor Hexagon and implemented its Cradle SC/Tetra computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation software.

The solution from Hexagon involved using SC/Tetra to visualize and analyze fluid flow within pump components, enabling Maruyama to evaluate and optimize geometries digitally. This was combined with quality engineering methods to identify the best design parameters. As a result, Maruyama significantly reduced prototyping, cutting both development time and costs. They achieved improved pump performance, including higher efficiency, more uniform flow, and reduced noise, confirming the success of the design changes through subsequent physical testing.
