Color Metal GmbH - Customer Case Study

Color Metal GmbH, a German manufacturer of large injection molds, faced challenges with production downtime and inaccuracies caused by unreliable tool setting equipment on their automated five-axis machining centers. To produce more economically under increasing time pressure, they sought a robust solution from vendor Hexagon (m&h) for their tool setters and probes to avoid machine stoppages.

Hexagon provided m&h infrared probes and Laser Tool Setters specifically designed to withstand the harsh machining environment. The laser's sealed optics and air curtain system prevented malfunctions from coolant and chips, eliminating the "Laser not ready" errors experienced with other brands. As a result, Color Metal's expensive machines could run continuously with greater accuracy, as the m&h lasers showed no measurement error compared to competitors' tools that had errors up to three tenths, leading to uninterrupted and more precise series production.
