A Hexagon Case Study
Magnomatics, a developer of innovative magnetic gear technology, faced the challenge of optimizing their MAGSPLIT® dedicated hybrid transmission for a Ford vehicle. They needed to rapidly investigate a wide variety of design options using realistic drive cycles to ensure fuel efficiency and reliable real-world performance. To meet this challenge, they partnered with Hexagon (Romax Technology) and used its rapid concept design exploration tool.
Hexagon's R&D team used its proprietary simulation tool to perform a broad-based concept design study, analyzing 2000 design variants across multiple drive cycles in just one week. The solution identified an optimal design that was least sensitive to different driving conditions. The simulations estimated a 3.3% reduction in fuel consumption for the MAGSPLIT® system over the existing transmission, providing powerful proof of its superior efficiency and leading to a reduced development time and cost for Magnomatics.
