Bringing New Dimension and Accuracy to Swiss Mapping

The Swiss Federal office of topography (swisstopo) faced challenges with a slow, multi-year production cycle and disconnected workflows that used disparate systems and data sources. Their geospatial products also suffered from accuracy issues. To address this, they partnered with Hexagon and Esri Schweiz AG to implement a unified system, seeking to integrate GIS and photogrammetry capabilities into a single interface.

Hexagon's solution involved the ERDAS Extensions for ArcGIS, including Stereo Analyst and ERDAS Terrain Editor, which provided stereo visualization and feature collection within the ArcGIS environment. This integration allowed swisstopo to more than double its production speed, reducing the time from data collection to map completion from two years to just nine months. The accuracy of their products improved significantly, enabling them to provide more detailed data and complete a country-wide 3D building model project.
