A Hexagon Case Study
BioSimulations, LLC, a medical technology company, needed to evaluate a proposed design for an implantable nerve clamp, an electro-mechanical device designed to stimulate nerve paths without causing damage to the delicate nerve sheath. Their challenge was to model the complex interactions of the device's components, including non-linear materials and sliding contact mechanics, to ensure its safety and efficacy. To address this, they selected the Marc nonlinear simulation solution from vendor Hexagon's MSC Software.
The solution utilized Hexagon's Marc software to build a detailed finite element analysis model of the nerve clamp assembly, which included silicone "fingers" and platinum iridium foil contacts. The software successfully handled the complex 3D contact, large displacements, and non-linear material behaviors. As a result, BioSimulations was able to successfully check all model components, perform critical pull-off load simulations to test the design's safety, and easily plot the results using Marc's post-processing features to validate the design concept.
