Automatic emergency caller location saves valuable time in South Australia

The South Australian Attorney-General’s Department faced a challenge locating emergency callers using mobile devices for its South Australia Computer Aided Dispatch (SACAD) system. Relying on outdated cell tower technology and verbal descriptions was inefficient and often inaccurate. To improve response times, the department partnered with vendor Hexagon to deploy Advanced Mobile Location (AML) services.

Hexagon's AML solution integrated with SACAD's existing computer-aided dispatch system to provide highly accurate, automatic location data from callers' smartphones. This provided locations within a 5-meter radius, a vast improvement over the previous several hundred-meter range. The results were life-saving, with the system credited for a successful rescue of two kayakers within days of deployment. Hexagon's implementation saved valuable time, reduced the risk of serious injury and death, and allowed emergency responders to provide aid faster.
