A Hexagon Case Study
Škoda Auto, a leading automotive manufacturer within the Volkswagen Group, sought to modernize its inspection processes and increase measurement capacity and quality. Partnering with measurement vendor Hexagon, the challenge was to reconfigure its operations to utilize automated optical 3D measurement systems instead of traditional tactile methods at its main plant in Mladá Boleslav.
Hexagon implemented two unique, fully automated smart measuring cells. The solution was centered on Hexagon’s robotic absolute measurement technology, including a Leica laser tracker and 3D scanner, and was powered by the HxGN Robotic Automation software within the PC-DMIS platform. This allowed for effective offline programming and the use of a flexible magnetic fixturing system. The results were a significant reduction in programming time, a substantial increase in measurement capacity, and the digitalization of outputs, providing Škoda Auto with a versatile and highly accurate inspection system that supports faster production launches.
