ASG Superconductors - Customer Case Study

The customer, ASG Superconductors, faced the immense challenge of manufacturing massive, uniquely shaped superconducting magnets for the ITER nuclear fusion reactor. The extreme precision required, with tolerances of a few tenths of a millimetre on 3D form and parts per million on length, left no room for error, as mistakes could lead to the failure of the multi-billion euro international project. To meet this challenge, they turned to vendor Hexagon for a sophisticated metrology solution.

Hexagon implemented a solution using multiple Leica Absolute Tracker AT901 systems, along with T-Scan and T-Probe sensors, to perform critical dimensional inspections throughout the complex manufacturing process. This allowed ASG to verify and adjust the shape of components in real-time before and after a crucial heat treatment. The results were a dramatic reduction in processing time, a significant simplification of activities, and an assurance of the highest data quality, ensuring the successful production of these one-of-a-kind magnets.
