Applying MSC Cradle CFD to WayRay’s holographic AR navigation cooling system development

WayRay, a developer of holographic AR navigation systems for cars, faced a challenge in designing a sufficiently powerful and compact cooling system for its laser units. The system had to maintain a precise, constant temperature for the lasers while avoiding catastrophic overheating that could destroy sensitive components. To solve this complex thermo-gas dynamic problem, WayRay utilized the scSTREAM CFD software from vendor Hexagon.

The solution from Hexagon enabled WayRay to perform detailed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, which provided critical insights into temperature distribution, airflow velocity, and thermoelectric performance. This allowed engineers to rapidly test design variations and optimize the cooling system virtually. The results were significant: simulations with over 24 million grid elements were completed in just two hours with an error of less than 3% compared to physical tests. This drastically reduced the number of required prototypes, saving both time and money in the development process for WayRay.
