Alberta Uses Geospatial Solutions to Manage Complete Road Network

Alberta Transportation, a Canadian provincial department managing a vast highway network, faced challenges after a strategic realignment. They needed an information system to manage data from external contractors, ensure accuracy with fewer field personnel, and provide web-based access to support their transition to a distributed operational model. To address this, they turned to long-time vendor Hexagon and its Geospatial Road and Rail Infrastructure Management Solution, including the GeoMedia WebMap product.

The solution from Hexagon enhanced Alberta’s Transportation Information Management System (TIMS), providing enterprise-wide access to integrated geospatial data. This resulted in improved data integrity, a significant reduction in field trips and data requests, and time and cost savings. The system also enabled new safety analyses, such as reviewing collision history. Alberta Transportation continues to leverage the Hexagon platform for future development, including a routing system for oversized vehicles.
