Airbus Jet Engine Pylons Inspected With Dual Laser Tracker Setup

Airbus faced a critical production bottleneck at its St. Eloi factory, where the quality inspection of essential engine pylons could not keep pace with a 54% increase in its target production rate. Their existing sequential measurement process with Leica laser trackers was too slow. To overcome this challenge, Airbus partnered with vendor Hexagon and its Leica Geosystems division to find a more efficient solution.

Hexagon's solution was to implement a dual laser tracker setup using the existing Leica LTD500s, synchronized by new EmScon software. This parallel measurement system slashed the inspection cycle time by 50%, allowing the required throughput without needing a new lab. The solution provided immediate data access and robust statistical analysis for quality control. Hexagon's partnership and technology enabled Airbus to maintain its rigorous safety standards while exponentially increasing production.
