Advanced simulation captures part performance for fibre reinforced thermoplastics

Avient Corporation, a provider of specialized material solutions, faced the challenge of accurately predicting the performance of its long fiber reinforced thermoplastics in end-use applications. The conventional isotropic modeling approach, which assumes uniform material properties, was insufficient to capture the complex, anisotropic behavior of their materials. To gain a more realistic prediction of part performance, Avient partnered with vendor Hexagon to utilize its Digimat platform.

The solution involved using Hexagon's Digimat to create advanced anisotropic material models that account for complex microstructural phenomena. This allowed for highly accurate simulations of tensile and flexural tests, which showed a significant improvement in predicting stiffness and failure locations compared to the old isotropic method. The more accurate simulations provided by Hexagon greatly increased confidence in product performance and helped Avient reduce development time and cost for its customers.
