Additive Manufacturing: Potentials of Simulation in Medical Technology

Simufact Engineering GmbH faced the challenge of unpredictable part distortions occurring during and after the selective laser melting (SLM) additive manufacturing process. These distortions, especially problematic for thin-walled medical implants like patient-specific craniomaxillofacial plates, resulted in parts that were out of tolerance. To overcome this, they turned to Hexagon for a simulation solution.

Hexagon provided its process simulation solution, which enabled Simufact Engineering to identify and predict distortions in advance during the build preparation phase. By using Hexagon's simulation technology, they could then adjust the build process accordingly to effectively manufacture distortion-free parts, ensuring dimensional accuracy and reducing the need for costly physical prototypes and rework.
