A Hexagon Case Study
Dura Automotive Systems, a global automotive supplier, needed to reduce the weight of a vehicle's spare tire tub to improve performance but found that using a lighter, hybrid material worsened its acoustic insulation, allowing more road noise into the cabin. The challenge was to redesign the hybrid tub to meet strict noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) performance limits without the cost of physical prototypes.
Hexagon, through its MSC Software's Actran solution, created a simulation model to analyze and compare the acoustic transmission loss of the original and hybrid designs. This virtual testing identified weak areas in the hybrid tub, allowing Dura to make targeted design modifications. The use of Hexagon's simulation technology resulted in a final lightweight design that met acoustic performance targets while delivering significant savings in both cost and development time.
