A400M automated assembly with Leica Laser Trackers

Airbus Military, a division of Airbus, faced the challenge of finding a flexible, automated, and highly accurate measurement solution for the assembly of their A400M military aircraft. The goal was to precisely measure the entire spatial geometry of the airplane to ensure quality and efficiency across three different assembly stations, each with its own software. The vendor, Hexagon, provided its Leica laser trackers to meet this need.

The solution involved integrating Hexagon's Leica laser trackers with an NC positioner to create a fully automated measurement system. The open architecture of the software made integration straightforward, and the system achieved measurements in just two minutes—a task that would take hours manually. This resulted in significantly improved accuracy and repeatability, which decreased the global assembly time for the A400M and became a critical part of the quality process.
