A Hexagon Case Study
5AXperformance GmbH specializes in machining difficult materials like carbon fiber composites and Inconel, which require high precision and present challenges with tool wear and surface quality. Their primary challenge was the sensitive nature of their PCD cutting tools, which are easily damaged by contact-based measurement systems, risking inaccurate data and unreliable machining. To achieve the necessary precision, they turned to vendor Hexagon and its m&h non-contact laser tool measuring systems.
Hexagon's solution involved installing robust m&h laser systems on 5AXperformance's machining centers. These systems measure tools at operational speeds under an air curtain and with a supersonic air jet to ensure dirt does not affect the readings, providing highly accurate data that accounts for the tool's real condition in the spindle. The results included significantly longer tool lifetimes, 100% operational reliability over eight years, and the elimination of unplanned stoppages, which provided invaluable security for unmanned machining programs and protected expensive customer parts from damage.
