3D White light scanning at the historical huts of Scott and Shackleton

The customer, Geometria, a New Zealand-based archaeological and cultural heritage firm, faced the challenge of digitally preserving the historic, deteriorating Antarctic huts of explorers Scott and Shackleton. The extreme environment, 24-hour daylight, and remote location required a highly precise and reliable 3D scanning solution, which they addressed using Hexagon's SmartScan system.

Hexagon's SmartScan successfully captured high-resolution 3D color data of the huts' exteriors and interiors, even in freezing temperatures. The system's performance in the harsh conditions was reliable, and by using makeshift light shields, the team overcame the challenges of ambient light. The resulting highly accurate digital models are now essential for ongoing scientific study, conservation planning, and public interpretation of these remote heritage sites.
