Shell avoids 45 tons of pipe rework with Hexagon PPM

The customer, Shell, a global oil operator, faced challenges in its design office where reliance on standalone tools for FEED projects led to issues with data consistency and completeness, risking costly design flaws and rework. To address this, Shell partnered with vendor Hexagon PPM to replace its AVEVA VNET system and implement a cloud-based solution using the Intergraph Smart toolset, including SmartPlant Fusion and Smart Data Validator.

Hexagon PPM's solution integrated disparate data sources into a single information database hosted on Smart Cloud, enabling improved collaboration and automated data validation. This resulted in increased design accuracy, the avoidance of expensive delays, and the early discovery of errors, such as identifying missing pipes from a 3D model that prevented a major issue impacting 45 tons of pipe. The success has led Shell to consider expanding the use of Hexagon PPM applications globally.
