Promech Delivers Underground Coal Gasification Project With Cadworx® and Caesar Ii®

Promech, an Australian multi-disciplinary engineering design and project management company, was tasked with delivering the full plant design and project management for Carbon Energy’s first commercial underground coal gasification project in Inner Mongolia. The project required a modularized, containerized design that could fit into 40-foot shipping containers while also managing an extreme temperature range from -40°C to 340°C, creating major thermal expansion and space-restriction challenges. Promech used Hexagon PPM’s CADWorx Plant Professional and CAESAR II to meet these demands.

Hexagon PPM’s CADWorx Plant Professional and CAESAR II were used to perform detailed piping design and pipe stress analysis in compliance with ASME B31.3, with CAESAR II handling the 380-degree temperature differential. The bi-directional integration between the two tools allowed Promech to work from a single model through iterative 30%, 60%, and 90% design reviews, reducing errors and saving significant time. The result was an efficient modular design process, faster isometrics and IFC drawing production, and strong enough performance that Promech plans to use Hexagon PPM’s solutions on future detailed design projects.
