L&T Chiyoda Addresses Refinery Engineering Challenges with CAESAR II

L&T Chiyoda Limited, a petrochemical EPC and project management firm in India, needed to complete a complex refinery upgrade for Indian Oil Corporation within a two-month shutdown window. The project involved 25 critical piping systems, high temperatures up to 780°C, and a turbine piping issue that triggered a design dispute, creating pressure to validate the engineering quickly. Hexagon PPM’s CAESAR II® was used to perform the necessary piping stress analysis.

Using Hexagon PPM’s CAESAR II®, L&T Chiyoda verified the piping and support design in both cold and hot conditions, resolved the turbine vibration issue, and avoided unnecessary design changes. The software also showed that large expansion joints were not needed in the 54-inch flue gas line, saving about US$1 million in material costs, or 4% of total project cost. The project was completed on schedule, with deliverables approved on first submission and the plant commissioned within the planned shutdown period.
