Leading Design Office Replaces AVEVA VNET with Intergraph Smart Toolset in the Cloud

Global Oil Operator’s UK design office needed a better way to manage FEED projects for the North Sea, where its standalone tools and manual data transfers created risks around incomplete, inconsistent design information. Working with Hexagon PPM, the team set out to replace AVEVA VNET with a more intuitive information portal using Hexagon PPM’s SmartPlant toolset, including SmartPlant Fusion, SmartPlant P&ID, SmartPlant Interop Publisher, SmartPlant Markup Plus, SmartSketch, and Intergraph Smart Data Validator.

Hexagon PPM implemented a cloud-based solution on Shell ProjectVantage via Intergraph SmartPlant Cloud that brought together unstructured and structured data into a single information database, improving collaboration, reporting, and data consistency across project teams, EPCs, and vendors. The system also caught major issues early, including 10-inch lines missing from the 3D model; if missed, they could have affected 45 tons of pipe and led to major cost and schedule overruns.
