Eskom digitalizes Matimba Power Plant in 4 weeks with Hexagon PPM

Eskom, a major South African energy utility, faced significant challenges managing the vast legacy documentation for its Matimba Power Plant. The information was stored in unstructured formats like PDFs and scanned images, scattered across multiple locations, making it difficult to access and hindering efficient operations and maintenance. To address this, Eskom partnered with Hexagon PPM on a proof-of-concept project using SmartPlant Fusion and Leica TruView technology to digitalize the plant's information.

Hexagon PPM's solution involved rapidly capturing and intelligently organizing the large volume of legacy data and documents into a single, structured environment. Laser scanning created photorealistic models of the plant, which were then linked to the digital documents. This allowed for intuitive navigation and immediate access to information. The project successfully integrated documents from multiple silos, making all information searchable and accessible. As a result, maintenance technicians can now visually identify equipment in the model and instantly access all related documentation, significantly improving efficiency for operations and future brownfield projects.
