A Hexagon PPM Case Study
On Line Design & Engineering Ltd. of England provides engineering and management services to the petrochemical, oil & gas, pharmaceutical, and general engineering industries. Faced with a corroded nozzle connection on a critical heat exchanger at a major oil refinery, the company needed a fast, accurate fitness-for-service solution to determine whether the piping system could remain in operation without a costly shutdown. Hexagon PPM’s CAESAR II and NozzlePRO were used to model and assess the system in-house.
Hexagon PPM implemented CAESAR II for piping code compliance and NozzlePRO for local finite element analysis of critical components. The refined analysis showed the nozzle loads were lower than initially feared and that the connection remained compliant with site and industry standards, allowing the owner operator to avoid an unnecessary nozzle replacement and lengthy downtime. The solution also helped On Line Design & Engineering expand its in-house analysis capability and reduce reliance on outsourcing.
