A major Middle East refinery faced a challenge with its new coker unit, which generated a high rate of irrelevant and non-actionable alarms during its normal cyclic operation. This ineffective alarm system created a high potential for operator error. The refinery partnered with Hexagon PPM to implement a solution using the PAS PlantState Integrity Dynamic Alarming module.
Hexagon PPM's solution used state-based alarming to automatically adjust alarm setpoints and priorities in real-time based on the coker's current operational phase. This implementation substantially reduced alarm rates, reinforced operator trust in the system, and ensured that all alarms indicated abnormal conditions requiring intervention.
