A Hewlett Packard Enterprise Case Study
VMS Software, Inc., the steward of the OpenVMS operating system, faced a customer challenge when it spun out as an independent company: long‑running, mission‑critical customers needed a clear upgrade and migration path to newer hardware without rewriting millions of lines of application code. To reassure finance, government and manufacturing customers and preserve decades of uptime and security, VMS Software, Inc. looked to Hewlett Packard Enterprise and its Integrity platform for supported modernization options.
VMS Software, Inc. worked with Hewlett Packard Enterprise to purchase and qualify HPE Integrity servers (including BL860 and rx2800 i2/i4 models) as test and validation systems, certifying OpenVMS on newer Integrity generations and establishing clear migration paths. The Hewlett Packard Enterprise collaboration restored customer confidence and extended investment life while delivering measurable benefits: a 61x–81x reduction in security risk, about 50x fewer patch events (roughly 1 vs ~50 patches per year), a ~25% lower TCO, approximately $30,000 saved per system per year, and much lower five‑year ownership costs compared with leading alternative OSes.
