A Hewlett Packard Enterprise Case Study
The University of Würzburg’s central IT team faced rapidly growing research and teaching data — driven by high‑resolution imaging and measurement devices — that had pushed its existing storage and tape infrastructure to capacity. To address the need for flexible, secure long‑term storage and faster backups, the University worked with Hewlett Packard Enterprise and its partner Bechtle and selected an integrated HPE solution including HPE 3PAR StoreServ 7400 storage and HPE StoreEver ESL G3 tape libraries with LTO‑6 tapes.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise implemented a complete HPE server, SAN and tape architecture (including two HPE 3PAR StoreServ 7400 systems, HPE StoreEasy gateways, ProLiant servers and two HPE StoreEver ESL G3 libraries) to deliver scalable on‑disk capacity and off‑site tape archiving. The deployment now provides 800 TB of usable SAN capacity (expandable), 1,500 tape slots across four frames (scalable to 12,000), 3.9× better compression and much faster overnight backups with LTO‑6, improved availability via 3PAR replication and geographically separated tape copies, and reduced administration overhead with a single support contact at Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
