A Hewlett Packard Enterprise Case Study
Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg’s SAP University Competence Center (SAP UCC) supports more than 470 higher‑education institutions and roughly 90,000 users across 180 SAP systems. Faced with growing data volumes, limited drive capacity and inflexible tape/disk backups that were stretching backup windows and management overhead, the SAP UCC turned to Hewlett Packard Enterprise for a more powerful, cost‑effective short‑term backup solution using HPE StoreOnce System and HPE Data Protector.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise implemented an HPE StoreOnce appliance with HPE Data Protector (and StoreOnce Catalyst features) to consolidate disk‑based backups, centralize management and apply federated deduplication. The deployment reduced backup storage from ~500 TB to a 120 TB net footprint, achieved roughly a tenfold reduction in stored data enabling protection of up to 1.2 PB, delivered restore rates up to 40 TB/hr, shortened backup windows, simplified administration and lowered costs, with further management time savings expected from StoreOnce Catalyst over Fibre Channel.
