Case Study: SM Retail achieves dramatically faster reporting and 100× faster ETL with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE Vertica)

A Hewlett Packard Enterprise Case Study

Preview of the SM Retail Case Study

SM Retail Gains Valuable Business Insights from Big Data

SM Retail, one of the Philippines’ leading department-store operators, faced serious information delays from its legacy row-store data warehouse that left critical daily SKU and inventory reports late or never completed. To fix slow ETL and reporting SLAs, SM Retail evaluated vendors and selected Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s HPE Vertica analytics platform to replace the existing database and support retail analytics.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise deployed HPE Vertica (leveraging a Manthan‑certified ETL ARC module) and its MPP architecture to accelerate analytics and reporting: ETL processing now runs 100× faster, data availability for decision-making improved 400–500%, and reports that once took six–eight hours now run in under 30 minutes (many low‑end reports drop from 10 minutes to seconds, high‑end reports complete in under a minute). As a result, reports are ready by 7am, inventory KPIs are viewable on tablets, user adoption rose, and new Mobile BI modules and analytics capabilities are being rolled out.
