RTL II Shifts Video Archive into hyperscale with HPE and Scality

RTL II, a German TV station generating roughly 200 TB of new video content per year, faced a rapidly growing active archive and rising 4K capacity demands that its legacy SGI DMF solution could no longer handle. To meet this challenge, RTL II turned to Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Scality, deploying HPE ProLiant SL4540 Gen8 Servers together with Scality RING object storage to provide a petabyte‑scale, standard‑hardware platform.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise implemented an 18‑server HPE ProLiant SL4540 cluster running Scality RING on Red Hat, replicated across three data centers, enabling RTL II to scale beyond 3.5 PB in 50% less space and simplify support. The new HPE/Scality solution cut transfer time for a typical 40 GB movie from 60–70 minutes to 6.5 minutes (a tenfold improvement), accelerated online distribution, supported same‑day last‑minute changes, and was installed in just three days.
