A Hewlett Packard Enterprise Case Study
KPN Werkplek, a subsidiary of KPN that provides cloud-based Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) services, faced a rapid scaling challenge after winning a large outsourcing contract to onboard 12,000 Dutch railway employees. To meet the surge in demand and keep its platform reliable for tens of thousands of users, KPN Werkplek turned to Hewlett Packard Enterprise, extending its use of HPE 3PAR StoreServ Storage, HPE StoreOnce Backup, HPE Data Protector and HPE networking and support services.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise implemented a standardized, converged storage environment (additional HPE 3PAR StoreServ 7400/7450 systems plus HPE StoreOnce with Data Protector and Proactive 24 support), enabling KPN Werkplek to store 4.5PB of client data and absorb rapid growth. The deployment delivered measurable gains: data deduplication cut used disk space by about 86% (to one-seventh), recovery time objectives fell by 50%, the data‑centre footprint dropped 50% (saving €5,000–€10,000/month), the platform supports ~60% annual growth and the solution is projected to pay back in under two years.
