KDDI Streamlines Data Warehouse to Improve Mobile Services

KDDI Corporation, Japan’s second largest mobile operator, faced a data explosion after launching its au 4G LTE service: 19,000 base stations generated billions of log records daily and the legacy Oracle data warehouse could not deliver the real‑time analysis needed to resolve service issues quickly. To address this, KDDI selected Hewlett Packard Enterprise and deployed HPE Vertica to re‑architect its analytics environment for high‑speed, large‑scale log analysis.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise implemented HPE Vertica on HPE ProLiant BL460c blades with HPE MDS600 storage, using column‑oriented processing and Database Designer tuning to enable 24x7 simultaneous loading and searching. The solution cut typical query times from about three minutes to roughly ten seconds on searches of 1.5 billion rows, supports loading up to 500 million records per hour (40 million in five minutes), achieves 50–90% compression, halved the load on Oracle, simplified DBA tasks, and gave KDDI a scalable, cost‑efficient platform to improve customer service.
